June 2008

This month at Metropawlis:

With gas prices at the level they are, it sounds as if people will be sticking closer to home this year. Luckily, Milwaukee has so much to offer!

Honestly, we didn’t even realize the extent to which the Third Ward had become a destination until after opening our store on Broadway. During the summer months we see visitors from all over the country (and even the world)! Even our shoppers from Chicago tell us what a gem Milwaukee is with interesting and reasonably-priced shopping, dining and cultural activities.

Perhaps you might consider a mini one-day vacation in the Third Ward this Summer.  Read on...

A Mini One-Day Vacation in the Third Ward

Looking for something to do that's close to home? Why not visit the Historic Third Ward?

You could spend a day (or more) enjoying everything Milwaukee has to offer in and around the Third Ward.  Here are some suggested activities:

Shop With Your Dog: Bring your pooch to Metropawlis for a free treat.  You can also take your canine with you as you shop next door at Anthropologie, which is dog friendly!

Take a Water Taxi:  The Milwaukee River Taxi serves three miles of waterways connecting Downtown with neighboring areas, including the Third Ward. The water taxis make regular stops at 15-minute intervals.  For $10 you can use it as many times as you'd like between 11 am and 7 pm Sunday through Thursday and 11 am and midnight on Friday and Saturday. A one-way fare is $5. Stops include Rock Bottom Brewery, the Water Buffalo dock, the Chase Tower dock, the Mason and Plankinton Street docks, Pere Marquette Park and the new Harley-Davidson Museum.

Take a Free Trolley:  Water taxi not your speed?  How about a free trolley?  Visit East Town, Westown, Water Street, Old World Third Street, the Historic Third Ward and the Milwaukee Art Museum in one 40-minute loop.  Trolleys serve stops every 20 minutes Wednesday through Saturday 11:00 am to 10:00 pm.

Stroll Milwaukee's Award-Winning Riverwalk:  Here's what the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette had to say about our riverwalk:  "Along the walk, designers built steps leading down to the river and circular overlooks just above the waves. The route is festooned with flower-draped lampposts, public art and benches just made for cracking open a book. Tiny bump-outs seem like perfect spots for moonlit kisses. Dozens of stores, cafes and bars with river frontage invite pedestrians to linger, browse and buy."

Visit Museums and Galleries: The Third Ward is home to a fun and unique museum dedicated to advertising; the Eisner is an interactive educational center focusing on advertising and design and their impact on our culture.  Just a mile away is one of the most famous art museums in the world--The Milwaukee Art Museum--featuring the spectacular world-renowned Calatrava expansion.  And lining the streets of the Third Ward are over a dozen galleries and studios.

Enjoy a sidewalk or riverwalk cafe:  The Third Ward is home to many cafes, brew pubs, restaurants, and taverns, including several with charming outdoor venues.  You can enjoy relaxation and refreshment in the sun (or shade) at establishments such as Rustico's (brand new last week!), The Ale House, Water Buffalo, Fratello's, Swig, The Palm's, The Wicked Hop, Coquette, Rip Tide, and Riverfront Pizzeria

Shop the Milwaukee Public Market:  Last but not least is a stop to the Milwaukee Public Market, home to artisan and ethnic products, freshly-made prepared foods, and cooking classes.  A free hour of parking (with validation) is available in their Water Street lot.  The Third Ward also offers two parking structures and several lots, in addition to plenty of on-street parking.

We hope you'll become a tourist in your own city soon!

Getting through the Marquette Interchange & Parking

Marquette InterchangeGetting to the Third Ward may seem difficult because of the Marquette Interchange Project, but it isn't!  Driving to Metropawlis from the north, south, or west is still very easy.  .  Click the icon at the right to receive up-to-date driving directions!

And parking nearby is plentiful!  Here's a tip:  Many folks stick to Water and Broadway Streets when seeking parking, but there's a lot more parking to be found just a block or two to the east, on Milwaukee and Jefferson Streets.  There are also three lots and structures within a couple blocks:

  • Milwaukee Public Market: The entrance to the parking lot behind the MPM is off of Water Street, between St. Paul and Clybourn. You can park free for the first hour (with MPM purchase)six days a week, and parking is free in this lot all day on Sundays.
  • Parking Garages: rages: The Third Ward has two large parking garages available for visitors. These can be found on the northeast corner of Milwaukee & Chicago Streets (212 N. Milwaukee St.) and the southeast corner of Water & Chicago Streets (225 E. Chicago St.
